“In partnership with Lawyers Christian Fellowship (lcf)–UK , this week of December 5 –December 9, 2022, LOH assembled its paralegals from all 12 sectors of Nyabihu district in a refresher training on laws.”
The purpose of this training was to update paralegals on a number of laws including; “Land and succession laws, child protection law, family law and GBV law.” Again, this training was in line with strengthening community structures that help provide legal aid services to community members without attending courts to promote the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism.
Among the topics covered; mainly the new land law of 2021 and land committees (i.e. law no27/2021 of 10/06/2021) was given an emphasis
Participants’ expectations included, but were not limited to; understanding the new land law, understanding the difference between matrimonial regimes, donations and succession; and how they are governed by the laws, knowing different organs in charge of land use and management, etc.
According to the observations and pre-training test, it turned out that the majority of the participants were not aware of the new land law of 2021, and 30% of the participants were not aware of the rights of a wife after the death of her husband, whether they were legally married or living in a common-law relationship
However, according to the post-training test and group discussions, more than 97% of the participants demonstrated an improved knowledge capacity and commitment to tirelessly help their communities to resolve the various family conflicts, in particular those resulting from land issues.
